Change is afoot in South Lake Tahoe's business community, including new ownerships, continued development and policy changes:

CHANGE IN OWNERSHIP AT ALPINA COFFEE

Missy Hullander is settling into her role as the new owner of Alpina Coffee Cafe on Emerald Bay Road.
A career pastry chef and former Sacramento resident, Hullander said she "wanted a place with character, not just something in a strip mall."
Hullander bought Alpina Coffee in September from father/son team Ed and Kevin Krumnei.
She initially planned to stay in Sacramento, but a trip to South Lake Tahoe sold her on the location.
"I love everything about the building and its atmosphere," Hullander said. "The history is kind of cool because of the ghost that haunts the place."
Since purchasing the cafe, Hullander began placing her pastries on the menu, including croissant bread puddings.
"It's just getting to know what the customers like," Hullander said. "I'm used to doing all these fancy desserts, but people here seem to like something that is just simple and good."
Eventually everything on the menu will become homemade, from panini sandwiches to soups and chili in the winter. Some breakfast menu items, made by Cakes by the Lake, may still be available.
Hullander said she will continue using coffee from Minden-based Alpen Sierra Coffee Company.
"I'm not going to change what people have come to know," Hullander said. "They have been coming here for years and know exactly what drink they want."

Lovely cafe to read, leverage WiFi, read early am newspaper but
Don't expect the cappuccino and quality of coffee to be anywhere close to Driftwood cafe. I Loved the location both indoor and outdoor. Loved to catch up on my readings in a peaceful and serene outdoor benches. Choice and selection of breakfast and lunch needs an upgrade to match the loveliness of its location.
The servers were polite and sweet. Choice of bagel didn't include any healthy item, i.e. multi grain or whole wheat....
Definitely worth visiting between the hours of 6am - 3 pm.

Rented a home at Tahoe Keys for a family reunion. The house had an awesome location right near the harbor exit, making getting on and off the lake quick and easy. The custom amenities including an indoor waterfall, 25 ft natural River Rock fireplace, 2 Game rooms, a full bar, 30 ft Boat Dock for up to 3 Boats, 5 Fireplaces, 2 Private Hot Tubs - everything was outstanding. The house slept 17 and was perfect for this family reunion. We discovered the quaint Alpina Cafe on a trip into town for groceries. It was a great place to relax for a bite to eat, but the choice of different coffees is what sold us. The woman who took our order was so friendly. She gave us a bunch of suggestions/ideas of places to see during our two-week family reunion. What a sweetheart. While the Tahoe home was impressive, it had us dreaming of other potential home improvements. Particularly, the idea of adding a gorgeous above-ground pool and perhaps a hot tub to our property back home. We've heard of Royal Pools And Spas in Hudson Valley, offering an elegant selection of pools & hot tubs that could perfectly complement our space, enhancing our summer experiences.

The café alpina is always the same, with good wifi, good coffee and pastries, friendly waitress. It's very comfortable to find the same atmosphere after all these years.

Good, throughout the years
First time I was in Alpina some six years ago, this coffee shop hasn't lost it's charm. I used to know some people working there but now they are all new, however, the good old feeling is still there, coffee is as great as ever....More

Warm and welcoming
We come here a lot when spending the summer close by. The free Wi-Fi sure is nice to go along with a delicious sandwich or salad and cup of wonderful tea!

Slow service, excellent coffee
If you are in a hurry this is not the place for you to grab your latte. They are a little slow as it is just a small shop. However, they do have an honor box that allows you to pay cash for the brew...More

No value or service
I stopped here for 2 lattes. In a hurry. When drinks delivered they were almost 1/2 foam. I didn't have time to wait for all other customers so I left the drinks. I called later to tell why I left the drinks on counter, hoping for a refund. I was asked if I still wanted the drinks & I told them not half foam. The staff reply. "OK"
A coffee shop is supposed to know & serve the various types of coffee drinks. This shop doesn't & also has no sense of service.

mmm.. ok coffee, nice tranquil setting though.
Hard to find decent coffee in Tahoe so this was recommended. Average at best but considering what's available maybe your only option. On the plus side, its great to sit outside, peaceful and tranquil and made us go back twice.

Superb coffee
Tiny little place just heading out of South Tahoe on the left. My Mrs thought the coffee was "unbelievably good". Quick service, parking.

True coffee shop feel, relaxed, good coffee
This hidden gem is a quiet getaway from the south Tahoe madness. Just north of the Y, small, nice place to tuck away and read or get some work done. Skip the sandwich croissants but the other pastries are fine. Sit outside in good weather.
